What an all-terrain tire is for.

All-terrain tires have tougher sidewalls and more open tread than a highway tire, so they hold up on gravel and bite in mud and snow, while still behaving on pavement.

Many all-terrains now carry the three-peak mountain snowflake symbol and can be run year-round. Check the sidewall, because not every size of every model has it.

Between an all-terrain and a mud tire sits the rugged-terrain or hybrid tire, like the Nitto Ridge Grappler: more aggressive to look at and in the dirt, a little louder on the highway. If you tow or haul, an LT tire with the right load range matters more than the tread pattern, and the team will check it.
