What BC requires.
British Columbia requires winter tires or chains on most highways from October 1 to April 30. On some routes the requirement ends March 31. Most highways outside the south coast are signed winter tire routes.
A legal winter tire in BC carries either the M+S mark or the three-peak mountain snowflake symbol, and has at least 3.5 mm of tread. Studded tires are allowed from October 1 to April 30.
Winter, all-weather or all-season?
| Type | Symbol | Best for | Trade-off |
|---|---|---|---|
| Winter | Three-peak mountain snowflake | Snow, ice and cold pavement. The rubber stays soft well below freezing. | Comes off in spring. Wears quickly in summer heat. |
| All-weather | Three-peak mountain snowflake | One set, all year, with real winter grip. | Not as strong on ice as a dedicated winter tire. |
| All-season | M+S | Spring to fall, and the legal minimum on winter routes with 3.5 mm of tread. | Hardens in the cold. Longer stopping distances on snow and ice. |
A common rule of thumb: once it is consistently below 7 °C, a winter or all-weather tire grips better than an all-season.

Changeovers, no appointment.
Seasonal changeovers are first come, first served. No appointment is necessary.
In peak season, the easiest way is to drop the vehicle off in the morning and leave it. If the team takes your keys, it is done that day. They will call when it is ready, or you can pick it up after work, so plan a ride.
