What an all-season tire is for.
An all-season tire is built for dry and wet roads and light snow. Most carry the M+S mark, which makes them the legal minimum on BC winter routes when they have at least 3.5 mm of tread.
The trade-off shows up in real cold. The rubber hardens as the temperature drops, and stopping distances grow on snow and ice. In Prince George, most drivers who run all-seasons keep a second set of winter tires, or move to an all-weather tire and skip the changeover.
